Mocha Mexicano (Mexican Coffee) Recipe

Mocha Mexicano (Mexican Coffee)

Region: Mexico 🇲🇽
Total Time: 6 minutes
Indulgence: ☕️☕️ (Medium)
The Story:
This recipe draws inspiration from traditional Mexican hot chocolate, which is famously spiced with cinnamon and sometimes chili. Incorporating these flavors into coffee creates a deeply aromatic and comforting drink that feels both ancient and wonderfully familiar. It’s often prepared in a cafetera (Moka pot).

Ingredients

  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee (or Moka pot coffee)
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1-2 tbsp piloncillo or brown sugar
  • 1 small pinch of cinnamon + more for garnish
  • A tiny pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)

Equipment

  • 1 Moka Pot or Drip Coffee Maker

Method

  1. As you brew your coffee, add the cocoa powder, sugar, and spices directly to the coffee grounds.

  3. Pour into a cup and garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
  4. Pro Tip: For an authentic finish, add a splash of Mexican vanilla extract after brewing.
